Project Overview

A Christmas food themed AR game made in Lens Studio as a group project.

Technologies Used

  • LensStudio
  • Javascript

Concept

Our team collectively brainstormed ideas, I suggested a food-themed app alongside others which we decided to go ahead with. A member of our team then suggested a recipe card scanning app. However as the process of development went along we shifted to a food game geared towards kids. This then evolved into a Christmas-themed AR food-eating game. The festive theme is not only fun but also opens up possibilities for future themes tied to different occasions. My role in this was multi faceted, I was involved in he development of the idea, technical aspects and coordinating it.

Individual contribution

I leveraged my coding skills in Lens Studio to focus on AR interactions, tackling challenges like refining falling objects and implementing the scoring system. My key contributions included creating the leveling-up system with JavaScript, establishing the initial scoring system, and adding UI elements and text pop-ups. I also tested the game extensively to ensure smooth functionality.

I played a significant role in both presentations, initially explaining the technical aspects and later improving the final presentation by clarifying our key points and detailing why AR was chosen.

Additionally, I selected sound effects, including level-up, eating, and game-over sounds from Freesound, enhancing the game's fun and immersion. I also coordinated the team, ensuring everyone was aligned and realistic goals were set as the idea evolved.

Reflection

I was proud of our teamwork that led to a complete, enjoyable final product. We were able to narrow our idea down and focus on a specific audience, and able to evolve our idea. Our final idea was very different to our first idea, but what we came up with in the end was much more fun and appealing.

Any setbacks, like issues with 3D models, we overcome by adaptation, as we opted for 2D models. We worked in a cross functional manner.

Outcome

I think we were able to meet the goals in making an app which would appeal to kids but also a general audience, that is fun and easy to play, and has a small educational element that doesn't distract from gameplay.
